The result was that working-class residents were displaced for half-empty luxury apartments.ĭemolishing the Cloverdale Apartments, destroying working-class housing is a loss that our city cannot afford. Unbeknownst to The Edge, Wake Forest decided to move its medical school to the Innovation Quarter. “The Edge” apartments that replaced the Westside Apartments were mainly constructed to house Bowman Gray medical students. One couple told me that they came to the Cloverdale Apartments in 2012 after they were forced to relocate when the former Westside Apartments on First Street were demolished. They told me that application fees were costing them dearly, negating the relocation allowance that the owners of the apartments are giving them. Residents that I spoke to on Thursday were uncertain of where they would go. The Cloverdale Apartments (and Ardmore Terrace Apartments) are in one of the best locations in the city, close to restaurants and retail-just a short walk from Baptist Medical Center. According to the Journal, approximately 45 residents remain at the decades-old apartment campus, which has become a fixture in Ardmore, with its simple brick buildings, Luthern red doors, surrounded by huge, old trees. The other would require rezoning and would include mixed use with street level retail on Cloverdale Avenue.Earlier this month, the remaining tenants at the Cloverdale Apartments were told to be out of their homes by early March. One would replace the apartments with about 370 units. It's also getting a lot harder to find actual affordable housing around here,’’ said Parsons.ĭevelopers are negotiating with the city over two proposals. “The ability to provide that affordable housing would be certainly be the responsibility of a municipal government,'' said Team.ĭevelopers are looking at keeping some of the buildings, but some want the whole project preserved. About 350 units total are part of the Ardmore Neighborhood's Historic District. "They're nice, reasonably priced, it's nice having all the old trees around,’’ said Ben Parsons.Īlong with the Cloverdale Apartments, they were built in the post-World War II housing boom. The Parsonage family has lived in Ardmore Terrace Apartments for a couple of years.
